About

Laid out from the 1870s on former sand dunes, the park is larger than New York's Central Park. It holds the Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden, the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum, along with lakes, meadows and a herd of bison. Windmills stand at its western edge near the ocean.

Best time to go: Combine the Japanese Tea Garden and the de Young Museum, then walk on towards Ocean Beach.
