About
The island served as a military fort and prison before becoming a maximum-security federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963, holding inmates such as Al Capone. Later it was occupied for more than a year by Native American activists. Today visitors explore the cellhouse, the gardens and the views back to the city.
Best time to go: Book the ferry well in advance, and take the audio tour of the cellhouse narrated by former inmates.
