About
Completed in the mid-eighteenth century on the Itapagipe peninsula, the church draws pilgrims who tie ribbons to its railings in hope of answered prayers. Each January the Lavagem do Bonfim sees Baianas in white wash its steps with scented water, a ceremony that reflects the city's blending of Catholic and African traditions.
Best time to go: Tie a coloured fita ribbon to the railings and make three wishes, and visit the room of votive offerings.
