About
The Maracanã opened for the 1950 World Cup, when crowds of around 200,000 saw Uruguay's shock victory over Brazil in the deciding match. Rebuilt for the 2014 World Cup, whose final it hosted, and used again for the 2016 Olympic ceremonies, it is still home to the city's great club rivalries.
Best time to go: Try to see a Flamengo or Fluminense match for the full atmosphere, or take a stadium tour on a non-match day.
