About
Ipanema entered global culture with the song The Girl from Ipanema, written in the early 1960s by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Its beach is divided into informal sections by lifeguard posts, each with its own crowd, while the streets behind are full of cafés, boutiques and the Sunday Hippie Fair.
Best time to go: Stay for sunset, when people gather on the rocks of Arpoador at the eastern end to applaud the sun going down.
