About
Founded in 1808 by the Portuguese prince regent Dom João, the garden was created to acclimatise spices and plants from other continents. Today it holds thousands of species, including an orchid house, a Japanese garden and giant water lilies, with the statue of Christ looming on the mountain above.
Best time to go: Come on a weekday morning to walk the avenue of royal palms in peace and spot monkeys and toucans.
