About
Known in Nahuatl as Tlachihualtepetl, the pyramid was enlarged in several stages over many centuries before the Spanish conquest, until it was overgrown and resembled a natural hill. The Spanish built the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies on the summit, and today visitors can walk through excavated tunnels and explore the uncovered plazas and altars at its base.
Best time to go: Climb to the hilltop church on a clear morning for the best chance of seeing Popocatépetl smoking on the horizon.
