About
Once a fishing village and later a fashionable resort for Porto's merchant families, Foz do Douro spreads along the river mouth and the ocean shore at the western edge of the city. A long promenade leads past rocky beaches, cafés and the old fort of São João Baptista to the Felgueiras lighthouse, where waves break against the pier in winter storms.
Best time to go: Take the historic tram along the river from the Ribeira and stay for sunset over the Atlantic.
