About
Founded around 500 BC, Monte Albán was for over a thousand years the political centre of the Zapotecs. Its Great Plaza is lined with pyramids, a ball court and the curious arrow-shaped Building J, while the Danzantes stones show carved human figures. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Oaxaca's historic centre.
Best time to go: Go early, before the midday heat, and walk the full length of the Great Plaza to the southern platform.
