Founded in 1870, the Met holds more than a million objects, from ancient Egyptian tombs to modern American paintings. The Temple of Dendur, set in a glass hall by a reflecting pool, is a memorable sight, and the galleries of European masters, arms and armour, and Islamic art are outstanding. In summer the roof garden offers views over the park.
