Founded in 778, Kiyomizu-dera is known for its wooden veranda, supported by 139 pillars, looking over the maple trees and the city. The lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka leading up to it are lined with teahouses and shops.
Best time to go: Early morning, or the evening illuminations in spring and autumn.
