About

Salt was mined at Wieliczka from the thirteenth century until the late twentieth, and the mine was among the first sites on the UNESCO list in 1978. Guided routes descend through chambers and passageways to the Chapel of St Kinga, where the chandeliers, altar and reliefs are all carved from salt.

Best time to go: Book a guided tour in advance and bring a warm layer for the steady underground chill.
