About
Built between 946 and 972, al-Mansuriya was the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate under the imams al-Mansur and al-Mu'izz. It was a walled city of palaces set among gardens, pools and water channels, the seat of a state that reached across most of North Africa and Sicily. It remained the Zirid provincial capital until the Banu Hilal destroyed it in 1057, and its materials were scavenged over the centuries.
Best time to go: Visit with a local guide who can explain the scant remains, ideally on the same trip as Raqqada.
