About
Opened in 2001, the museum begins with visitors randomly assigned to separate entrances by racial category, a jarring introduction to the system it describes. Films, photographs and personal testimonies trace the history of segregation, the resistance movement and the negotiations that led to the 1994 elections, with a moving section on Nelson Mandela.
Best time to go: Allow at least three hours and arrive early; the displays are powerful and not to be rushed.
