About
Once the Grande Rue de Péra, the avenue was the cosmopolitan centre of the city's European quarter. A red historic tram runs its length past embassies, churches, arcades and cinemas, and the side streets are full of bars, bookshops and meyhane taverns.
Best time to go: Walk from Taksim Square down to Galata in the evening, when the avenue is at its liveliest.
