About
Sultan Abdülmecid I moved the court here in the 1850s, choosing a European style of marble halls, crystal staircases and chandeliers. Atatürk, founder of the modern republic, died in the palace in 1938, and its clocks are still stopped at the moment of his death.
Best time to go: Visits are by guided tour; arrive early and allow time for the waterfront gardens.
