About
Knossos flourished for centuries as the largest Minoan centre, a sprawling complex of courtyards, storerooms and royal quarters. Arthur Evans excavated it from 1900 and controversially rebuilt parts in concrete, and his restored red columns, grand staircase and fresco copies help visitors picture the palace at its height.
Best time to go: Arrive at opening time to beat the tour coaches and the midday heat, ideally after seeing the museum.
