About
Hu Xueyan made a fortune in banking, silk and medicine in the nineteenth century, and in the 1870s he built this lavish residence in the old heart of Hangzhou. Carefully restored, it is a maze of halls, courtyards and a rock garden with ponds and pavilions, rich in carved wood and fine detail that reveal how a wealthy merchant family lived.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning, then wander the old shopping streets of Hefang nearby.
