About
Kek Lok Si at Ayer Itam is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and draws pilgrims from across Southeast Asia. The complex was built between 1890 and 1930 at the initiative of its abbot, Beow Lean. Its centrepiece is the seven-storey Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, commissioned by the Thai king Rama VI. Above it stands a bronze statue of Guan Yin more than 36 metres tall.
Best time to go: Go in the late afternoon, then stay into the evening if the temple is lit for festivals; dress modestly.
