About

The Romans built this 7.5-kilometre causeway in the late second century to link El Kantara, on Djerba, with Zarzis on the mainland. It lies close to the ancient city of Meninx, which was the administrative centre of the island under Rome, so the two are easily seen together. Crossing it gives a clear sense of how narrow the channel is between Djerba and the coast of Tunisia.

Best time to go: Cross it by car in daylight and stop at El Kantara to look back along its line.
