About
The El Ghriba Synagogue stands in the old Jewish village of Hara Seghira, now Erriadh, a few kilometres south-west of Houmt Souk. Although it was extensively renovated in the nineteenth century, it may be the oldest synagogue in the world, and one legend links its founding to a stone or door from Solomon's Temple. It remains the centre of the island's Jewish life and a place of pilgrimage.
Best time to go: Dress modestly and cover your head inside; combine it with the murals of Erriadh nearby.
