About
Legend tells that a white elephant carrying a relic of the Buddha climbed the mountain and died here in the fourteenth century, marking the spot for the temple. A long stairway flanked by serpent balustrades leads up to a gleaming golden chedi, and the terraces look out over the city and the plain below.
Best time to go: Go up early in the morning, before the clouds and crowds, and climb the naga staircase rather than taking the lift.
