About
The church of the Virgin Mary takes its nickname from its position, raised over a gate of the Roman fortress of Babylon. A church has stood here for well over a thousand years, and the present interior, with its wooden barrel roof, marble pulpit and screens of ebony and ivory, holds a remarkable collection of icons. It is the centrepiece of the historic Coptic quarter.
Best time to go: Take the metro to Mar Girgis and explore Coptic Cairo, including the Coptic Museum and Ben Ezra Synagogue.
