About
Founded in the early fifteenth century, the complex was where the emperor, as Son of Heaven, performed the most solemn rites of the year. Its most famous building, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, rises in three tiers of deep blue tiles, while the Echo Wall and the open Circular Mound Altar reflect the cosmology behind the design.
Best time to go: Arrive early in the morning to see locals practising tai chi, dancing and singing in the surrounding park.
