About
Largely built under the Ptolemies and Romans, the temple of Isis was one of the last places where the ancient Egyptian religion was practised. When the Aswan dams threatened to submerge it, a UNESCO campaign dismantled the whole complex and rebuilt it on Agilkia Island. Its pylons, colonnades and the graceful Kiosk of Trajan rise straight from the water.
Best time to go: Take the short boat ride out early in the morning, when the light on the island is at its most beautiful.
