About

Al Jahili Fort was built in 1891 by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan to protect date farmers in the Al Jahili oasis. In 1955 it became a base for the Trucial Oman Scouts. It has been open to visitors since 1971, and its mud-brick walls and towers are a fine example of traditional fort building in the region. It lies close to the centre and is easy to reach on foot.

Best time to go: Visit in the morning, then walk on to the nearby Al Ain Oasis.
