The Amir Timur Museum opened in Tashkent in 1996 and is dedicated to the Turco-Mongol ruler Timur, known in the West as Tamerlane. It was built after independence, when the country set out to revive its cultural heritage. The year 1996 was declared the Year of Amir Temur, marking the 660th anniversary of his birth. The museum stands beside Amir Timur Square in the centre of the city.
