Created for the wealthy collector António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, the estate blends neo-Manueline architecture with esoteric symbolism. Its gardens hide tunnels, lakes and the famous Initiation Well, a spiral stairway descending deep into the earth.
