Built in the early fifteenth century as a secondary palace, Changdeokgung became the favoured residence of many Joseon kings. Its halls are set informally among the wooded hills rather than on a strict axis, and behind them lies Huwon, the Secret Garden, with pavilions and ponds hidden in the trees.
