Built in the 1880s for the businessman George Heys, Melrose House is one of the finest Victorian homes in the country, with stained glass, ornate ceilings and period furniture. During the Anglo-Boer War it served as a British headquarters, and in 1902 the Treaty of Vereeniging, bringing the war to an end, was signed in its dining room.
