The bazaar grew from a fifteenth-century trading hall built soon after the Ottoman conquest into a maze of streets and courtyards. Thousands of shops sell carpets, lamps, jewellery, leather and ceramics, and the old caravanserais tucked behind its alleys still host workshops.
