Spread across three connected buildings beside the main station, the Kunsthalle traces seven centuries of European art. Its most famous work is Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, and there are strong collections of German Romanticism, Dutch masters, French Impressionism and twentieth-century art, including the contemporary Galerie der Gegenwart.
