For the people of Silla, Namsan was a holy mountain, and its valleys hold a remarkable concentration of Buddhist carvings, stone Buddhas and pagodas. Its trails lead through pine woods to these open-air shrines, and the mountain forms part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas World Heritage Site.
