The town hall rose in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries at the meeting of Long Lane and Long Market, and its slender tower, topped by a gilded figure of King Sigismund Augustus, still dominates the skyline. Rebuilt after wartime destruction, it now houses the city's history museum, whose highlight is the Red Room with its painted ceiling and carved fireplace.
