Once a small holiday village, Umhlanga has grown into an upmarket resort with hotels, restaurants and shopping. Its paved promenade runs along the dunes past rocky pools and golden beaches to the red-and-white lighthouse, the town's emblem. Nearby, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board explains the shark nets that protect the coast.
