Robben Island

For centuries Robben Island was a place of banishment, and under apartheid it became a maximum security prison for political prisoners. Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years in jail here. Tours, often led by former inmates, visit the limestone quarry and his cell, and tell a powerful story of endurance and reconciliation.
