The site was once a royal estate, and in the thirteenth century it was given to Augustinian canons, who built the stone church and cloister that survive today. After the Reformation it passed into private hands and became a farm. Now restored, its church, cloister and chapter house form a peaceful group, often used for concerts in summer.
