Founded in 1906, the museum now cares for the Maisel, Pinkas, Klausen and Spanish synagogues, the Ceremonial Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery, where gravestones lie layered over centuries. The walls of the Pinkas Synagogue carry the handwritten names of Czech and Moravian Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
