À propos
Carved into the basalt of Elephanta Island around the sixth century, the main cave is a pillared hall filled with sculptures of Shiva in his many forms. Its centrepiece is the great three-headed Sadashiva, several metres high, and the site was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987. A steep stepped path leads up from the jetty through stalls to the caves.
Meilleur moment pour y aller: Take an early ferry from the Gateway of India and allow most of a morning for the round trip.
