The square takes its popular name from the four stone lions supporting the Morosini Fountain, built in the seventeenth century to bring water to the city. Close by stand the Venetian Loggia, now the town hall, and Saint Mark's Basilica, making this the best place to start a walk through Venetian Heraklion.
