St Gereon grew from a late Roman oval building associated with the martyr Saint Gereon and his companions. In the early thirteenth century it was rebuilt as a soaring decagon crowned by a ribbed dome, a feat of medieval engineering. With its long choir and crypt mosaics, it is among the most remarkable of Cologne's Romanesque churches.
