The heart of Paldal District is the old town enclosed by the fortress, where the reconstructed Hwaseong Haenggung was the king's lodging on visits to his father's tomb. Around it lie traditional markets by Paldalmun gate, a lane famous for fried chicken, and quiet streets of cafés and small galleries.
