The city was founded on this small island in the thirteenth century, and its street plan has changed little since the Middle Ages. Stortorget, the oldest square, is lined with gabled merchant houses, and the lanes around it lead to the cathedral, the Royal Palace and Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the narrowest alley in town.
