Construction of the theatre stalled for years before it finally opened in 1904 as the Teatro La Ópera, and it took its present name in the 1940s. The gilded auditorium, with its tiers of boxes and painted ceiling, ranks among the finest in Argentina and still hosts opera, ballet and classical music.
