Completed in 1949 to designs by Gerard Moerdijk, the monument honours the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony in the 1830s. Its Hall of Heroes is encircled by a vast marble frieze depicting their journey, and an opening in the dome is aligned so that a beam of sunlight falls on the cenotaph at noon each 16 December. The surrounding nature reserve has walking trails.
