Enclosed by medieval walls in the north-west of the city, this field of lawns sets off four gleaming marble buildings of the Pisan Romanesque style. Together they formed the religious heart of a powerful maritime republic. The ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio's description of it as a meadow of miracles gave it its popular name.
