Generations of pharaohs added pylons, courts and shrines to Karnak, making it one of the largest religious sites ever built. The Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of 134 towering columns carved with reliefs, is the highlight. Beyond lie obelisks raised by Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, avenues of ram-headed sphinxes and a sacred lake.
