Completed in 1859, the synagogue's twin onion-domed towers and patterned brickwork announced the confidence of Pest's Jewish community. During the Second World War it lay within the ghetto, and its garden is now a burial ground and memorial, with a weeping-willow sculpture bearing the names of Holocaust victims.
